Code readers can read and clear diagnostic fault codes on the BMW E36. Access to individual control modules depends on the reader and diagnostic connection used.
Diagnostic connections
The round diagnostic connector in the engine bay is used to access modules such as ABS and airbags with a compatible reader and a 20-pin adapter. The interior OBD-II port, where fitted, provides engine diagnostic access rather than access to all modules.
Code readers
Creator C310
The Creator C310 is an inexpensive option for the E36. E36 Repair reports reasonably accurate fault descriptions and quick code clearing.
Compatibility note: E36 Repair cautions that this reader may only work for engine codes on the E36. ABS and other module access should not be assumed.
Foxwell NT530
The Foxwell NT530 connects to the round engine-bay diagnostic connector using a compatible 20-pin adapter.
E36 Repair reports access to engine, ABS, airbag, and other E36 control modules, including reading and clearing fault codes.
Foxwell NT710
The Foxwell NT710 is described as similar to the NT530, with a larger screen and claimed faster reading times.
20-pin diagnostic adapter
A compatible 20-pin adapter connects the reader to the round diagnostic connector in the engine bay.
This connection is needed to access ABS, airbag, and other modules with a compatible reader. The interior OBD-II port does not provide the same module access.
