Fluid capacities and recommended fluid types for U.S.-market 1996–1999 BMW 328i and M3 models.

Note: Capacities may vary slightly depending on the engine, transmission, equipment, and amount of fluid remaining during service.

Cooling system	Approx. 10.5 L 11.1 qt	BMW-compatible coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water	A normal drain may require less because coolant can remain in the engine block and heater core.
Manual transmission	Approx. 1.3 L 1.4 qt	Fluid matching the transmission identification label	Keep the vehicle level and fill until fluid reaches the lower edge of the fill opening.
Automatic transmission	Approx. 3–4 L during a typical drain and refill	Approved ATF matching the transmission identification label	Total dry capacity is higher. Check the final level using the proper fluid-temperature procedure.
Rear differential	Approx. 1.7 L 1.8 qt	75W-90 GL-5 gear oil	Limited-slip differentials require fluid suitable for a clutch-type LSD.

Important: Verify the labels on the transmission, power-steering reservoir, and other components before selecting a fluid. BMW used different suppliers and specifications during E36 production.
